From the article Homosexual "Marriage" and Civilization by Orson Scott Card:
Regardless of their opinion of homosexual "marriage," every American who believes in democracy should be outraged that any court should take it upon itself to dictate such a social innovation without recourse to democratic process. And we all know the course this thing will follow. Anyone who opposes this edict will be branded a bigot; any schoolchild who questions the legitimacy of homosexual marriage will be expelled for "hate speech." The fanatical Left will insist that anyone who upholds the fundamental meaning that marriage has always had, everywhere, until this generation, is a "homophobe" and therefore mentally ill.
In response to this, Cory Doctorow over at BoingBoing shoots these terms at Orson Scott Card:
Irony, oh irony. And what's the point, really?
- disgraceful
- notorious
- revolting
- anti-gay
- homophobia
- sophistry
- shameful

Let's pretend it's 1955 and engage in a bit of word substitution for fun and profit:
This is just too easy.Posted by: Frank Boosman | 02/27/2004 at 02:34 PM
Let me try that.
Regardless of their opinion of interspecies "marriage," every American who believes in democracy should be outraged that any court should take it upon itself to dictate such a social innovation without recourse to democratic process. And we all know the course this thing will follow. Anyone who opposes this edict will be branded speciest; any schoolchild who questions the legitimacy of interspecies marriage will be expelled for "hate speech." The fanatical Left will insist that anyone who upholds the fundamental meaning that marriage has always had, everywhere, until this generation, is a "speciest" and therefore mentally ill.
You're right Frank, it is just too easy. When you put words in somebody's mouth, all you've done is put words in somebody's mouth.
Let's try another one, only this time your words:
Orson Scott Card's "Enlightened Views"
Gee, this is fun.

Hi Frank,
You did a nice job of going toe-to-toe with Card on this subject over at your blog. I plan to read it again tomorrow morning when I'm not so tired.
I contrast your passionate yet thoughtful post with the BoingBoing post, which had all those words in just two sentences with no substantive argument. What's the point of that? Who is it going to win over? It just seems like name-calling to me.
Anyway, thanks for dropping by!

Tom, thanks for the kind words. I'd appreciate your perspective when you have a chance to read through my post again. I'm always interested in an intelligent exchange of opinions!

30 second political ads that are run in the weeks prior to election that cost millions of dollars make no sense to a thinking person with common sense either. that's because they are targeted for a parallel universe--the universe of emotion--and they work.
this culture is diseased with emotion. everyone is shuffling along in a herd wearing their suits of many buttons. the deviant activists, and all of the left, are expert and relentless button pushers.
