Milt Rosenberg

Since 1973, Milt Rosenberg has been host of WGN Radio's "Extension 720", a two-hour discussion show with one hour reserved for call-ins. The program, which airs Monday through Friday from 9 to 11 p.m., deals with topics ranging from politics to financial investment to entertainment to religion to foreign policy to literature, and, as Milt says, "just about everything except pop psychology and poodle-trimming." Outside of WGN Radio 720 studios, in what he calls "real life," Milt is a professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago, where he has served as the director of the doctoral program in Social and Organizational Psychology. Listeners from thirty-eight states, and increasingly from around the world via the Internet, tune in every night to hear Milt.

What Is A Cheese Curd?

"A cheese curd is an orangish cheese byproduct that feels like Silly Putty but tastes a lot better. It was invented accidentally by UW cheese scientists attempting to create an object of pure cholesterol that would still squeak. Rats who are fed this remarkable food develop an unusual capacity to polka and drink beer."

But seriously, folks, cheese curds are fresh, young cheddar cheese in the natural, random shape and form before being processed into blocks and aged. (Cheddar cheese is typically aged from 60 days to 4 years before being sold.) Unlike the aged variety, curds lose their desirable qualities if refrigerated or not eaten for a few days (the squeak disappears and they turn dry and salty).

Ivy League National Media: Meet the Heartland

About five years ago, during my first weeks working at The Washington Post, the paper ran a front-page story in which, in the first paragraph, they misspelled Schlitz, the beer that made Milwaukee famous.

I asked an old friend who worked at the paper how this could have happened, since the story had, conservatively, been vetted by no fewer than eight sets of eyes.

His one-word response, "Ivy," as in the Ivy League schools from which many of the staff matriculated and where, presumably, Schlitz was not as in high demand as it had been at, say, a Machinists Hall in Cudahy.

Not long afterward, and my memory tells me it was the same day, an all-newsroom e-mail went out asking aid from anyone who spoke Tagalog, a Western Austronesian language indigenous to the Philippines. It was only a matter of moments before another memo circulated, thanking the staff for all the responses.

So The Washington Post, I surmised gloomily, was a place where they can't spell Schlitz but can speak Tagalog.

Aside from a subject matter that Hollywood would be too timid to touch in the early 21st century, the cost of the star power behind this flick – a veritable who’s who of big names in 1970 – would simply be too daunting. That, and it is quite likely that any modern filmmaker would turn the melodrama into camp cheese and ruin everything. Here, however, it’s all done right. Anyone who loves movies should definitely have a look at Airport.
