Gayle McCormick Album Covers
Best remembered as the singer on the scorching 1969 hit Baby It's You, Gayle attended Pattonville High School near St Louis when my father was the principal there. I've always been a fan of hers because of that. What a voice . . .

Gayle McCormick could definitely sing. Noticed your entry on your father....I think I sat few a detention class or two as his guest when I was a freshman at Pattonville...Class of 71.

My dad was principal there at Pattonville from 1962 to 1967. I think maybe Ken Buhlig was principal in 1971.

Yes, Buhlig was the principal in 71. I was referring to my Freshman year 67-68. Having been at in the Pattonville system K-12 I might have met your dad during my days in the Holman building.

How do I catch up with Gayle McCormick? Does she have a web site or an email posted somewhere? She is an absolute titan, a siren of sound from the great psychedelic top 40 period of 1969-70.
Every now and again, I get fixated on a song from this period and have to hear it over and over again. The one I am on now is her version of "Baby, It's You." I am hopelessly infected with her affect on this song. Just can't rid myself of her belting it out:
Many, many, many nights go by...
How did such a wispy, slight thing just knock Grace Slick and Tina Turner into next week, ripping that song right out of the speakers on your Motorola car radio.
Gayle, Gayle, Gayle!

Hi, I was just ripping my cd's to my new computer and came across the old Smith album. I did a google search on Gail and came up with your site. Where is Gail now? I remember back in 69 when this album came out, I heard a rumor that she was sick with throat cancer or something like that, and that this would likly be her last album. Evidently not true. Anyway, I was just wondering what she is doing these days. I always had a kind of crush on her. I thought she was hot, back in the day.
Thanks for the site.

gayle was always a pleasant, fun wonderfull gal.

Gayle McCormick's "It's A Cryin' Shame" popped into my head today and I searched Itunes and they didn't have it or anything by her. It was one of the first 45's that I bought as a kid and would love to hear it again. I still have the 45, but no record player. Anyway, if anybody knows where I could download that song, I would appreciate the tip. I didn't know until coming here that she was in a group prior or made more music later, nice to know.

From Paris France, some info on Gayle Mc.I was the wife of one of her musicians. they toured all over the US in early 70's. Fantastic voice, great potential, but sad to hear,Gayle could not keep up with tour pressure and had health problems plus heavy drugs and pills. Tour had to stop, Gayle left and another singer replaces her to finish tour-fans were furious-Manager during that time split with tour money (and was shot in head some years later in Chicago),left Smith with bills and in debt; that was sad end of Smith.

I still remember seeing Smith sing on some music show when I was about 10 years old. Smith's first Album was re-relaeased as a CD in 1995 Smith - A Group Called Smith - 1995 - CD Varese Sabarande 5489. I was able to find ONE copy on e-bay. Otherwise, the only way I was able to purchase the song "Baby, It's You" was through a 1969-1970 Hits compilation on Amazon. If anyone has any other info, please let me know.

I bought my tattered copy of A group Called Smith from an unwanted 2nd hand bin circa 1980 for $1.99. To this day it remains one of my all time favourite records. Gayle McCormick? One of the most powerful renditions of the female voice ever recorded. The whole album should have become a cult classic -- what about the fantastic versions of Mojeleski Ridge, Baby its You, and my favourite, the absolutely awesome: I Just Wanna Make Love to You.
Whoa!

I don't know where the Hell I am (online) right now, but you all are talking about my favorite group ... I was in the Navy in 1968-1971 and "A Group Called Smith" was, and still is, my favorite LP! The power of Gayle's voice is overwhelming ... I heard "Baby It's You" on XM radio over the weekend ... I had to stop my car ... it was just to much. I still have my original "Smith" LP, but am looking for a CD ... my turntable crapped out so I can't burn my own CD ... I never thought I would ever hear about "Mojeleski Ridge" ever again ... unreal !!!

I was googling for info on Smith and I found this charming site with all these comments on Gayle McCormick. I don't think I can endorse the political views here :-) but this is a classy blog and it's so cool to see random people discussing some random, forgotten singer.
I'm listening to A Group Called Smith right now for the first time going through a stack of vinyl I've bought at thrift stores (I never pay more than $1).
The cover didn't look promising; looked cheesy; I guessed MOR country rock; but for the price I usually take a shot at albums if they're on smallish labels, and this definitely had that "small-time" vibe; those are the ones that have the most potential.
Much to my surprise, this is an excellent album! Reading about it online I see that it has a bit of a cult following. I'm not much of a fan of mainstream rock a la the Stones; in fact, it's one of my least favorite styles of music, but, yeah, this McCormick is a damn good singer! And the guy singers are good too. And the band has a nice sound. And, yeah, damn, she's hot! I didn't think "Baby It's You" was the standout track on the album, though, but rather roughly on par with a few others, like the first cut. The first cut on side two is a winner too. There's no weak or annoying tracks on here. I usually play albums once to satisfy curiosity and then I'm done with 'em, but I'll definitely play this one again!
I love the randomness of the internet...
I'm 29 years old, digging into the 60s thing in recent years...

I was shopping with my wife the other day at Chico's.... Ok I was holding her purse while she tried on stuff and I heard this male duo over their sound system performing "Baby it's you". It was ok, but it really got me thinking about Smith & Gail's great voice. I used to have the album back in HS (68-71) and it was always on my turntable. To this day there are still two songs that stop me in my tracks when I hear them Merry Clayton's soulful vocals in the Stone's Gimmie Shelter and of course Gail on Baby it's you. Both are just so incredible. I was on the internet looking for a Smith CD and I came across this site. Nice to know that there are still a bunch of Smith lovers out there and thanks for reminding me about Mojeleski Ridge!! Now I HAVE to find the CD. Plus I would really like their version of "The Weight". Gail put a little bit of herself on record years ago for us to enjoy and there are some of us that still carry her around in our hearts. All the best Gail wherever you are and thank you.

My favorite 8-track was A Group Called Smith. I wore it out and life went on. Now over 35 years later I can still hear Gayle in my mind. I've been looking for a CD, especially the 1995 release. If anyone knows where I can find one or a copy, please let me know.

Hey, since everyone on this site loves Gayle and her songs, how abut putting together a small reunion/convention honoring Gayle and her music? I'd be happy to get the ball rolling by lining up a venue and possibly fronting some of the costs.
Any interest out there?

Spoke with her on the phone in 94 or so, she was living with her mother. She sings at karaoke in St. Louis occasionally. Then I heard she got married. Her mom spoke with me a couple of times and she was fab. I wish Rhino of someone would release her solo album "Flesh & Blood" on Decca. It's killer. Great songs by Leon Ware, Boz Skaggs and others.

She recorded "Flesh" at Ike Turner's studio Bolic Sound with the late Joe Schermie of 3 Dog Night. Her story would make a good documentary or feature film. Her last album "One More Hour" has some good 70's soul, rock. And her Shady Brook single "Simon Says" could be hit today, as well as the excellently arranged and sung flip side "Comin' In Out of the Rain". Much better than the more well known song with the same title by Peter Allen/Melissa Manchester.

Gayles music was with me all during my time in Nam
My girlfriend Cathy Jackson sent the record to me in the mail. I was a medic in a dust off company and we all had good stereos from the PX. When the guys saw the cover with Gayle on it well you had to be there. We played and taped the hell out of the first 2 smith records. Hope she is well and happy as we are getting on Gayle and I are the same age ---cheers

Can't someone get in touch with her in St. Louis and do a little update interview and post it here? Is she married, how's her mom? Is she still doing karaoke, why hasn't someone from a major publication done an update on her (The Enquirer could fashion a human interest story on her).
Posted by: conner | 04/14/2006 at 01:36 PM
She recorded "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" with Smith in 1969 and in 1975 or so on "One More Hour" did "Why Can't I Just Make Love To You".
Posted by: scottina | 04/14/2006 at 03:22 PM
And she did two different songs with the title "It's a Cryin' Shame"!!!!

A Group Called Smith...that was a moment in time. The Hammond B3, Gayle on vocals, I can close my eyes and I am there again. This gal got me through some tough times overseas 70-72. She was one of the best right with Lydia Pense and Cold Blood, Tracy Nelso and Mother Earth moving the bay area.
I can put on the record, and I am there again. Seeing her eyes closed, head back that hair, that voice, everyone who saw her fell in love. Thank you Gayle, I hope you are well and happy. This is one guy who came back and kept a memory that had something happy in it. I hope if you ever read any of this stuff, that you realize that your music mattered. It really did make a difference in someones life.

A bunch of us St. Louis area veteran rockers are putting together our "dream" band -- 9-piece classic rock/cover band with killer brass section, and WE WANT GAYLE MCCORMICK! We were playing out around here back when she was still with the Klassmen. GAYLE: IF YOU'RE OUT THERE ANYWHERE, PLEASE EMAIL ME!! When auditioning women singers we've played your "Baby It's You" for every one of them and said, "If you can sing this, like Gayle did, you're in this band; if not, forget it." So far, not surprisingly, no one matches up with you. We're going for the real thing now! Gayle, please respond! I'd bet my vintage '67 Rickenbacker you can still do it. MZ - michealz@sbcglobal.net. PLEASE!

Follow up on CD from Amazon.com/UK.
This is a poor cd with only 10 of the original 15 tracks. Do not buy if you think it is the original.
Many of the tracks are miss labled and out of order and the recording quality is poor at best.

MZ - why don't you try contacting Gayle through her mom or send a letter to the above areas of St. Louis that people thought she was living in? She probably doesn't go on the internet. Or, without scaring her or stalking, go to Circuit City or Sears in that mall mentioned above and see if they know where she is? She told me on the phone she and her mom go on those gambling boat tour thingies. Is she licensed through Itunes? Her stuff is owned by Universal Music, I believe, who bought Dunhill Records.

I just heard this woman for the first time, through Spectropop. Really like the song "Without You", which is probably different from the material you all are talking about. You can hear the power in her voice even from that song.

"Without You" by Gayle McCormick? I thought I knew everything she recorded, but don't remember anything by that title. I would love someone to get in touch with her and post a pic of her. Imagine what she must look like today. The last pic anyone has seen is from the "One More Hour" sessions from mid-70s.

Posted by: Mike | 06/22/2006 at 08:24 PM
Hey...I had heard "Baby, It's You" on the radio over the July 4th weekend and remembered hearing that version years ago...I loved it then and love it now. I never knew who the group was until last week when I looked it up on the net and came across Smith and Gayle McCormick.
* I also just bought "A Band Called Smith" cd from someone in England via eBay...paid alot of $, but haven't listened to it yet. The way the auction was going, it seemed like it was "worth" alot of money. When I took it out of the packaging, it looked like they had just made album copies and printed a cover. It said it was "new and sealed", so I figured that meant it was new from 1995. NOT! I should have delved into it further, but I didn't know any better, actually.
* I would also like to purchase the actual 1995 cd with all 15 songs on it, if anyone knows where I could get one, as well.
Thanks...

following up on conner's reply from 6/19: the song "Without You" is listed as being recorded by Gayle McCormick and the Klassmen in 1967. It's a locally released 45, so it's probably nowhere to be found except by collectors.
Posted by: rambutan | 07/18/2006 at 11:59 AM
Right...I have heard of that Klassmen single and it did turn up on eBay. There are probably not many of them around. I wish Gayle would do an interview with someone and let us know what's up with her. There's a tribute website to her, but she doesn't participate.
Posted by: conner | 07/19/2006 at 10:27 AM
Cindy M: you can find the 1995 Smith compilation CD on eBay. It's good, but doesn't have enough of their sophomore album (which is better, to my mind) "Minus Plus".
Posted by: conner | 07/19/2006 at 10:29 AM
Been in love with the song baby its you since i was i guess 10 or 11 years old, Gayles voice is awesome to say the least. I dont think i have ever even heard another one of her recordings, but hopefully will in the future. i think that Johnette Napolitono of Concrete Blonde has a similar voice as Gayles very strong and rememberable. its a shame that singers like the ones today get all the notice with not even close to the talent of a Gayle.thanks for the oppurtunity to voice my thoughts.
Posted by: frank | 07/26/2006 at 07:31 PM
I was fortunate enough to like the band and to purchase both of the first two Smith LP's - A Group Called Smith is great, but Minus-Plus was my favorite. I have looked for YEARS to find anything other than single version of Baby It's You on CD. From what I read here, it doesnt look very promising i will ever find either LP on CD. It is a real shame because i would much rather like having all the songs re-mastered, but I guess i have no choice except to rip them to my PC and burn my own CD.
Posted by: karl | 08/07/2006 at 01:53 PM
Keep checking on eBay. They occasionally have the SMITH CD compilation under Gayle McCormick. So search under her name. I also thought "Minus Plus" was superior, as it is all originals or obscure songs which aren't covers of hit songs, like on "A Group Called Smith."

The year 1965. I had a paper route and I was 12. Gayle's house was on that route. Occasionally she would answer the door to accept the Sunday edition from me. I remember standing on the porch admiring her as she would hand me the 25 cents. She isn't just a beautiful singer, but a beautiful person as well. She always had a beaming smile for this awkward adolescent.

Hi all,
Found Tom's site when I was curious about what song Smith was famous for. If anyone is interested I have a still-sealed copy of the Smith lp called, "A Group Called Smith". It's got a stick on the shrink wrap. "Featuring Gayle McCormick". It must have also been a close-out because the last price sticker is 57 cents. My first class postage would be $6 the lp itself would be whoever makes an offer or the highest offer.
Posted by: Tom | 08/21/2006 at 09:07 AM
I also purchased the CD from the guy in England. However, it's an Italian release of the original - it doesn't have the additional 5 songs from the Varese Sarabande release (very disappointing).

wow! i am so happy to see i'm not alone in the world...when i was 9 years old my mother gave me MINUS PLUS by SMITH, my god what a voice!...this is the first time i find a site where we all share the love for her voice obvisously she has touched us pretty deep, and following on the coat tails of conner, i think she should be regognized for such a timeless voice and talent, but reading up on the history of dunhill records, the band smith and later her solo work can leave a talent bitter and not interested in looking back without having some pain...so whoever is brave enough to approach her should tell her first off, how she truely has touched fellow humans here on the planet, that she indeed has left a mark on those sho still find peace in her voice, along the lines of any great entertainer that touches your soul... entertainmet is the second oldest profession, it makes the time here on earth more pleasurable, she needs to be told regardless of financial or world renowned short commings, all of us here have a mutual desire to let her know we've been touched by her talent. IS ANYBODY HERE A PUBLICIST...get her an interview!!!

I've been waiting for YouTube to post Gayle w/Smith music, glad to see that Mike T was quick to put in a comment to direct people to the video that just appeared.
To me, it seems like Gayle is singing live over a recorded version of the song that differs a bit from the released studio version (musicians are synching). Does anyone recognize what TV show this clip is from? I believe that Gayle & Smith appeared on Sullivan, but this clip on YouTube seems to be from another source. Very glad to see and listen to this -- Gayle does a nice job with the song on this video. Hope there is more music video to come to share her talent.

Just uncovered 2 dusty old Smith cassette tapes from my collection. Discovered her tribute sites on Google. Thanks to all for the info. Gayle had an awesome voice and I wish someone would re-release her solo stuff on cd. I've often wondered what her career would have been like had she come from the UK. She had a better voice than Petula Clark or Dusty Springfield. Gayle also had that natural look the British female vocalists didn't have. Gayle, you were great.

I am happily surprised to see all of these messages regarding Gayle McCormick. One of the first 45's I bought was "It's Crying Shame" and didn't know until this evening that it never made the Billboard Top 40. It sure got played a lot on L.A.'s 93 KHJ-AM. I still have the 45, but haven't heard it in at least 30 years. Would love a best of CD - what a voice.

I have the Smith CD w/bonus tracks. Anyone who wants a copy can email me privately @ dgmseh@juno.com.
I actually met Gayle in the mid-to-late 70's when she was working at J.L. Marsh in Olivette. She was great and very flattered that I knew of her....autographed my LPs too!

Wow--love reading all these great comments on an utterly fantastic talent as Gayle McCormack and Smith. I was just a kid when I first heard her remake of the Shirelles' "Baby It's You" in 1969, but the effect it had on me---I think you all know what I mean. Her sound gave me goosebumps, head and shoulders over many other singers then, or today. I only recently re-discovered her, never really knew way back then who did the song, only that when it came on the radio, I was utterly mesmerized, by that stunning voice and delivery, and still am. I hope she realizes that her talent is MISSED and NEEDED and will get another CD together sometime soon. Try some Ipod downloads sites (typically, around $40 to join) to get "Baby It's You", though her other songs with Smith are harder to find through such means. E-Bay seems the best bet at this time, expect to pay a bit---but then again, isn't Gayle worth every penny? How does one put a price on the performance of such an artist? How cool to read that some of you who knew her say that she was totally cool and friendly---somehow, I just knew she had to be, given her ability to share her soulful depths with us through that amazing voice. Gayle, I don't know you, but I wish I did because nobody who can sing with your soul and beautiful, haunting style could possibly be anything but a very, very special human being, indeed---as an earlier poster noted, a "Titan". May you live long, and prosper.

I remember hearing it on KFJZ in Ft. Worth way back when. It was a powerful song then, and it is just as powerful now. A really really amazing version of a song done by others with nowhere near the effect.
Gayle, I hope you are doing well. You have brought happiness to many of us through your music. Thanks.

A tiny stage set, so Gayle has to stand in place for the number. Like other TV performances, sounds like the band and the add'l horn parts to the song are being synched.
More for Gayle fans to enjoy !

I grew up in N County in the late 60's. Saw Grindhouse tonight and it had a bit of Baby It's You in it. Brought me back. Does anyone know if Gayle is still in the St. Louis area?
Thanks

Tarantino got the rights through Universal Music and I wonder if Gayle gets anything, she didn't write the song, but sure puts her own stamp on it! I wish she'd do an interview with National Enquirer or somebody....I wonder what she looks like?? Was playing her last album "One More Hour" and it's got some amazing songs. Also her single "Simon Says" could be used on "American Idol".

Wow. After all these years, a Gayle McCormack fan club. I just happened to stumble across this website. I knew Gayle in the late '70's/early '80's in Los Angeles, Ca. I was playing keyboards in a band named "Shady Oak" and Gayle joined and sang with us for about a year. "Baby it's You" was still knocking 'em dead then. If anybody is still in touch with her, please say hello for me and wish her well.

Someone posted on YouTube saying he talks with Gayle every week and she's doing fine in St. Louis, working in sales for some corporation, he didn't say which. Bob, wasn't her last single "Simon Says" on a label called Shady Brook or Shady Oak? Did you play on that? It's available on eBay from time to time. The flip is also good, "Comin' In Out of the Rain", kinda Gladys Knight 70s sounding.

I would love to do a series of Gayle t-shirts. Particularly the cut-off jeans, ribbed knit halter top cover of "Flesh & Blood" produced by Joe Schermie (r.i.p.). Think it's a strong graphic showing Gayle's passion (which rivaled Janis Joplin's) and would make a great tee-shirt.

Chuck Negron owns Blood Sweat&Tears, he is their front man, they do their hits then he comes on doing his 3 Dog Night material. They were just in Laughlin,Nev about a month ago. Gayle would sound as good as Chuck, does with BST, backing her up. Theres a calling for ya Gayle....

I remember when Gayle was the lead singer for Steve Cummings and the Chevels. This was 66-67. Anyone else remember this. Steve Cummings went to Hazelwood High.

Check out this people search link for Gayle Mccormick in St louis Missouri. It gives her age as 59 which is probably her since she was born in 1949. For some money you could get her telephone. https://www.intelius.com/search-summary-out.php?ReportType=1&searchform=name

Was searching for Smith info when I came across your site.
I'm sure Gayle/Smith would get a great response if they were up to playing/recording currently. Good luck in contacting her. I look forward to the interview.

Bob Medley now owns a bar in St Peters, MO. It's called All Stars Pub, and is right at the Cave Springs exit from I-70. Stop in and say hi.

Who has the masters of "Flesh & Blood"? Is it Universal Music? I wish Rhino would release a Gayle compilation with that and "One More Hour".

talked to gayle last month. she is working at nw plaza (3 years at same job). she knows about the internet interest but doesn't own a computer! she did laugh about the rumors: married, cancer etc.
she's not hard to find, certainly not hiding.
fun to see steve cummings' entry--how's it goin', buddy!

OMG, you talked to Gayle, what is the job she's doing? She's not married? And is her mom still alive? Did she know about the Tarantino film?

I have played "Baby it's you" on my show and for some reason after I tuned Iit up during a set dedicated to '69, I googled up a pictue of Gayle and the Smiths. I was young and not living in the USA (GI Brat) otherwise I surely would have been seriously infatuated. A sweet voice and very pretty. I am sure she made a lot of boys, men and soldiers dream. I love to do a video interview of Ms. McCormick. Rather than walk NW Plaza and bug Gayle at her job, anyone that has the capacity to talk to her, forward this message, contact me directly or call the station (WDLJ 97.5) 618-594-2620 and they will point to me.
