New Orleans has always been a rough place. When I was researching my book Concealed Weapon Laws of the Early Republic, I was reading newspapers from the 1803-1812 period--and one memorable article was from a newspaper that announced, "Good news!! No assassinations since our last issue!" New Orleans had 7500 people at the time--and this was a daily paper.
