Five important events of the Fillmore Presidency:
- California admitted as a free state
- Texas boundary dispute settled
- Territorial status to New Mexico
- Federal officers placed at the disposal of slaveholders seeking fugitives (Fugitive Slave Law)
- Slave trade abolished in the District of Columbia

And here's a little known piece of Fillmore history that pertains to Wisconsin. Zachary Tayler had placed a removal order on the Chippewa bands of Northern Wisconsin. The plan was to remove them to Minnesota. The removal would have effectively abrogated the treaties the Chippewa had signed which forfeited their land holdings in Northern Wisconsin. A contingent of Chippewa, led by a Chief Buffalo, who was in his 90's, traveled to DC and met with Fillmore after Taylor's death. Fillmore agreed to stay the removal order. This would play into the litigation over treaty rights in the 1980's, as the courts had to determine if the Taylor order had abrogated the treaties or if the Fillmore stay had placed them back in place.
