- My 83-year-old father is doing quite well after the death of my Mom this past December. He's gotten hearing aids in both ears so we don't have to shout when talking to him now. How he ever heard Charlie Sykes without them will forever be one of those unsolved Mysteries of Life.
- For those of you who missed the events of my last Thanksgiving, here's Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. (This will explain the Charlie Sykes reference.)
- My wife, after spending two weeks in the hospital last November with a heart attack, an abdominal bleed (they poked a hole there when putting in the stent in her heart), and a pulmonary embolism, came home xx-plus pounds lighter than when she went in. So she decided WhatTheHeckWhyNotJustKeepItUp and started running and training in earnest. She just finished the Pewaukee Triathlon a couple of weeks ago. So that one has a Happy Ending too.
- During the cycling portion of the triathlon one of my wife's friends was looking down at the ground and ran into the back of a truck. Broke her thigh, and had to have surgery to repair it. So even in the Best Of Times human life is always a 2-Steps-Forward-1-Step-Back kind of affair.
- One of my cousins developed a pulmonary embolism after having her hip replaced and died after a month or so. We had the after-funeral reception for her almost 3 months to the day after my Mom's service, in the same church.
- I still remember and appreciate all the nice notes (both by mail and electronic) and flowers we got when my Mom passed away.
- I didn't get any flowers or even a card from my co-workers, tho. But another co-worker a couple of cubicles down got both when his grandparent died. What's with that?
- So, I found a different job within UltraGlobalMegaCorp, back in Division X. Nice folks, lots of positive energy. So Another Happy Ending there too.
- One of the things I'll miss in the new job: At my previous building I was next-door to the workplace of a well-known Milwaukee-area lefty blogger, and we used to get together for lunch. Like I said, 2-Steps-Forward-1-Step-Back.
- And finally, we got rid of the 1991 Volkswagen Vanagon and got a nice new van. After 17 years it's more than a bit odd not to see the VW in the garage.
- And finally (really!), Heinz 57 Sauce on a bratwurst is a nice change of pace.

Condolences. It's not the same after people die.. it's such a fragile thing we take for granted. But that's what grandkids are for. I hope you have plenty to take away the sting.
