Another Blue Football Field: Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium at the University of New Haven

Boise State's blue turf has its first collegiate competition - in West Haven, Conn. The University of New Haven finished installation of a new blue artificial turf inside Ralph F. DellaCamera Jr. Stadium last week. Players practiced on it for the first time Tuesday. The NCAA Division II program is reinstating football, and the Chargers will begin playing in 2009 as a member of the Northeast-10 Conference....

New Haven installed blue turf for the same reason Boise State did - marketing and publicity. "Absolutely, we're making a statement. We're bringing football back and we're doing it the right way,'' Chin said. A former New Haven softball player works for Ralph F. DellaCamera Jr., a school alum and New York City businessman. She knew DellaCamera was making a donation to renovate the school's old football stadium and, after doing some online research, she suggested a blue turf. "She took the idea to Ralph and suddenly everybody got excited,'' Chin said. Feedback from the student body and the university's board of governors was unanimous, Chin said. She also contacted the NCAA rules committee to make sure it was legal and found that there are no rules against colored football fields. University officials plan to use the field and renovated 4,000-seat campus stadium to host conference championship events in football, men's and women's soccer and women's lacrosse.

High schools in Barrow, Alaska; Hidalgo, Texas; and Lovington, N.M., play their football games on artificial blue surfaces.
